What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in, supplements, food and can also be made in your body after exposure to the sun (ultraviolet or UV rays). Sunshine can be a major source of Vitamin D because UV rays from sunlight trigger Vitamin D manufacture in the skin.
The major biologic function of vitamin D is to sustain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. As it promotes calcium absorption, vitamin D helps to strengthen our bones. Vitamin D also works with a number of other vitamins, minerals, and hormones to promote bone mineralization. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen.
What can Vitamin D Do?
Research suggests that vitamin D may help maintain a healthy immune system and help regulate cell growth and differentiation, the process that determines what a cell is to become. Laboratory, animal, and epidemiologic evidence suggests that vitamin D may be protective against some cancers. Epidemiologic studies suggest that a higher dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, and/or sunlight-induced vitamin D synthesis, correlates with lower incidence of cancer.
How do we know Vitamin D works?
For over 60 years researchers have noted an inverse relationship between sun exposure and cancer mortality. This inverse relationship between higher Vitamin D levels in blood and lower cancer risk in humans is best documented for colon and colorectal cancers. Vitamin D emerged as a protective factor in a study of over 3,000 adults (96% of whom were men) who underwent a colonoscopy between 1994 and 1997 to look for polyps or lesions in the colon. About 10% of the group was found to have at least one advanced cancerous lesion in the colon. There was a significantly lower risk of advanced cancerous lesions among those with the highest Vitamin D intake
Research concerning Vitamin D provides an unorthodox hypothesis: that cancers and other diseases in developed countries aren’t caused solely by environmental contaminants but rather by a vitamin deficiency which is less pronounced in developing nations. Those trying to brand contaminants as the key factor behind cancer in the West are “looking for a bogeyman that doesn’t exist,” argues Reinhold Vieth, professor at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto and one of the world’s top Vitamin D experts. Instead, he says, the critical factor “is more likely a lack of Vitamin D.”
A four-year clinical trial involving 1,200 women found those taking Vitamin D had about a 60-per-cent reduction in cancer incidence, compared with those who didn’t take it, — twice the impact on cancer attributed to smoking. One of the researchers who made the discovery, professor of medicine Robert Heaney of Creighton University in Nebraska, says Vitamin D deficiency is showing up in so many illnesses besides cancer that nearly all disease figures in Canada and the U.S. will need to be re-evaluated. “We don’t really know what the status of chronic disease is in the North American population,” he said, “until we normalize Vitamin D status.”
What’s more, researchers are linking low Vitamin D status to a host of other serious ailments, including multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes, influenza, osteoporosis and bone fractures among the elderly.
