The immune system is the system that protects an organism, in this case our human body, from invasion by bacteria, viruses, parasites, germs, toxins and all kind of pathogen microorganisms.

Our immune system assist us in staying healthy by avoiding infection to spread in our body. Let just say that our immune system allows us to stay alive. As soon as the immune system stops working properly or is overload, we get ill and can even die.
For many germs, the human body is an ideal ground and they certainly would love to get inside and invade the body. It's the immune system job to keep them out. But if they get in, it is also the immune system job to look for and destroy the attackers.

The first barrier these invaders encounter is the skin, which provides a great defence for the body. The skin is not easy to go through and produces an assortment of substances that are risky to the invaders. Openings like the eyes, the nose and the mouth, which appear easy to invade have some defence too. They are protected by fluids that can arrest sneaky invaders.

As you can see, immune systems are constantly busy and on the lookout for pathogens that are trying to heart our body. It is not an easy task because the first thing the immune system has to do is to recognize and keep in mind millions of different enemies.

Also, it has to fabricate the proper defence like secretions and cells to match up with and wipe out each germ. This is done with the help of a complicated communication network. Millions of organized cells get together and exchange information back and forth. As soon as the immune cells receive the alarm, they start creating powerful chemicals. But the fantastic ability to distinguish the body' s own cells and the foreign cells is the key to a healthy immune system.

This is critical since without this ability the immune system will not have a clue of which organisms to attack or not. This is done with the help of "marker molecules". When the immune system defenders encounter organisms carrying markers that say "foreign", they immediately launch an attack. The faster the response the better they can get rid of the invaders.
